此作是齐白石所作鸳鸯戏水图,笔墨简约,意蕴丰厚,是典型的“红花墨叶”风格。画左上绘两片荷叶。画家画荷叶以石绿色敷染,掺以藤黄色及墨色,铺毫刷笔,让墨色在干湿、虚实、浓淡中形成自然、和谐的块面;再勾出叶脉纹络,形成如荫似盖的绿叶。为让绿叶有所依托,画家饱蘸浓墨,掺以石绿色,顺势在绿叶下渲染出大片墨块。绿叶用墨浓中有淡、实中带虚,层次丰富,黑色和绿色相互映照。两叶之间,用胭脂红涂出荷花。花苞在田田荷叶之间,有一种“万绿丛中一点红”的感觉。画家从画右面的边际画出墨中带绿的藤杆,让其与荷叶相抵,如撑开的绿伞。三株藤杆粗细、长短不一,彼此交叉着。画中的荷叶以厚重的块面绘出,塘底的涟漪以细劲的线条绘出。下半部的横向线条起伏变化,给人一种微风吹动、水波荡漾的感觉。

齐白石说过:“余作画每兼虫鸟,则花草自然有工致气。若画寻常花卉,下笔多不似之似,决不能此荷花也。”观《鸳鸯戏水图》,粗放笔法画成的荷叶与工细笔法画成的鸳鸯形成对比。此画用笔或重拙、或轻灵、或粗犷、或纤美,力度与情趣兼具,饶有金石之气;墨色酣畅淋漓,红花与墨叶(及绿叶)相映,富有生机;荷叶团团,在构图上,上部荷花实中带虚,下部涟漪虚中有实,中间的鸳鸯连接了这两部分。
